Making an Impression - The Art of Ann Nosworthy
By Simon Blundell
A descendant of a wine producing family in the Cape, Ann Nosworthy is inspired by the beauty of the countryside. Her subject matter is comprised of everyday scenes that she "likes to look at", such as innocent children at play in green fields, or next to a bubbling stream; animals and nature, blue skies dotted with white clouds; an old colonial farmhouse; a garden tea party in the shade, and breathtaking floral arrangements beside open windows.
The subject matter is boundless, but the serene mood is maintained throughout. Twice nominated "Best Oil Painter of the Year" by the South African Society of Artists, Ann Nosworthy cites her greatest influence as being the works of the French Impressionists.
This is quite evident in her painting with her use of obvious 'living' brushstrokes emphasizing the light, shade and general mood of the scenes she captures. Ann captures a fleeting moment in time, a moment she says "leaves an impression" on her. Like the Impressionists, she paints everyday scenes that are pleasing to the eye, but what becomes more important than the "what" she paints, is the "how": the method and technique.
Hilary Webb, of Carmel Gallery in Constantia Cape Town talks of a "mystique" in Ann's ability to capture light and shade, which, according to Hilary, makes each scene a "living entity". She says that Ann's "restful subject matter" and "wonderful sense of colour" are instrumental in creating a presence in a room which "completes" it.
Hilary's view seems to be shared by anymore who admired Ann Nosworthy's artwork. Unsurprisingly Ann's solo shows are regular "sell-outs". Ann introduces a soothing element into a more chaotic world, and one feels that much better for having had the opportunity to appreciate the images she creates on her canvasses. Define Art are very proud to be exhibiting Ann's brand new batch of work ahead of her November Exhibition.
